Unlocking Flawless Wedding Hair: Why Multiple Preview Appointments Are Your Secret Weapon

Hair is arguably one of your most important accessories on your wedding day, right up there with makeup. So, what’s the secret to flawless wedding day hair? Preview appointments! These crucial pre-wedding hair appointments, otherwise known as “hair trials”, are collaborative appointments to try out different looks and experiment with techniques to ensure it’s perfect on your wedding day.

Early into planning brides often find that their stylist they visit at the salon for cut and coloring services do not offer bridal services. This leads brides to search for a hairstylist who specializes in wedding hair. While putting your trust in a complete stranger on one of the most important days of your life may sound nerve-wracking, remember they are experts in the wedding world. However, you are complete strangers after all, so you’ll need to offer your stylist a bit of grace as they get to know your hair type and preferences. That is why having at least two preview appointments is a crucial to the success of your wedding day hair.

Did you know most brides aren’t happy with their hair after their first preview appointment?

It's perfectly normal to not be head-over-heels in love with your hair after just one preview appointment. Think of it as a first date with your stylist – a chance to get acquainted, share your vision, and for them to assess your hair's unique characteristics. This initial session lays the foundation for crafting a personalized approach to your dream look. During your second preview appointment, your stylist will come prepared with a tailored approach to creating your dream hair. This can include things like starting with a blowout to prep your hair, adding clip-in extensions, or integrating new products into your daily hair regimen. You will likely feel much more at ease after your second appointment, but there may still be some things you’d like to refine. In that case, you can either trust your stylist to make the requested adjustments on wedding day or request a third preview appointment.

Another reason brides often don’t usually fall in love with their hair after just one preview appointment is simply because you might not know what you want. Given the sheer amount of inpso that floods your Instagram feed and ever-changing trends, that’s understandable. Also, let's face it, most of us haven't attended a black-tie event, let alone planned our own! So, how are you supposed to know what black tie appropriate hairstyle looks best on you? After your first preview appointment, you may think that the stylist executed the requested look perfectly but it’s just not for you. That is exactly what these appointments are for— experiment, adjust, and refine as much as you need to! Do some more research and come up with a new look to try during your second appointment. Your hairstylist will likely have some suggestions as well.

How to get the most out of your preview appointments—

  • Share inspirational photos with your stylist in advance— try to find an image of the front, side, and back of a stye with your hair color.

    • Pro Tip: Bring examples of similar hairstyles you don’t like so your stylist can understand what you like and dislike about each image.

  • Wear a color and a neckline similar to your wedding dress if possible.

  • Bring any earrings and/or hair accessories you are considering with you to the appointment.

  • Bring clip-in hair extensions if you plan to incorporate them into your style.

  • Come with an open mind and don’t overthink your first appointment. It takes time to get to perfection!

Your wedding day look is meticulously planned, each detail thoughtfully chosen to create a vision of your dreams. Don't leave your wedding day hairstyle to chance by having just one preview appointment before your wedding day. Multiple preview appointments lay the foundation for flawless wedding hair and a stress-free morning.
